We will use the CUSU voting website to vote electronically. More details to come soon…

MCR Committee Roles

The MCR Committee is structured as detailed below. Although a short summary is included for each position, it is best to contact the current committee member for a full understanding of the role. Alternatively, Bennett is available to discuss any questions you may have regarding the duties of all positions.

Executive Officers:

Executive Officers must be full MCR members and the nomination requires a proposer and a seconder.

President (Bennett Waxse – bw311)

In the words of Andrew Haines: The President gets to chair meetings (like a boss), send emails (like a boss), and sit on committees in and out of college (like a boss). Liaison with college officers (the Senior Tutor, Bursar, and Steward) and the UCS, and representation on college Council and Governing Body allow you to directly address issues faced by the MCR and improve life for grad students at Clare. Additionally, the President acts as the public face of the MCR, a visible contact point who answers questions about, or resolves problems related to, all aspects of graduate life. Like a boss.

Vice-president (Payam Gammage – pag44)

The Vice-president assists the president by sitting on various committees and generally getting involved in the work done by the committee.

Secretary (Bob Blackburn – rjb200)

The secretary’s primary responsibilities are minuting meetings, managing the MCR’s membership and mailing lists (including editing the regular bulletins).

Junior Treasurer (Olivier Grouille – olgg2)

The Junior Treasurer looks after the money, balances the books and sets the annual budget. He/she also sits on the College Finance Committee and is responsible for MCR membership subscriptions and policy as well as the financial aspects of the MCR Bar. Generally speaking, this is a time-consuming job that entails a lot of detailed admin work, a lot of emailing, collecting and writing cheques and requires a good working relationship with the college offices and porters, as well as a lot of patience in dealing with very specific and seemingly trivial issues. That said, it’s also a great opportunity to work with the Bar Manager, President and Social Secretaries to come up with new ideas for revenue generation and expenditure aimed at making life at Clare yet more fun and comfortable for the MCR membership.

Bar Manager (Payam Gammage – pag44)

Clare’s famous MCR bar is a self-sufficient enterprise, at the helm of which is the Bar Manager. You’re in charge of the stocking and staffing, so you can make sure we always have your favourite drop in stock (although you might not be too popular if you replace the whisky selection with a delectable smorgasbord of Sainsbury’s Basics spirits). Special events and tastings are also your domain.

Social Secretaries (2) (Glory Liu – gl317; Katy Bird – kb461)

There are two Social Secretaries, who make sure the MCR is a fun place to be. They lead the committee in the organisation of freshers’ week, run formal every Friday, and set up other events like Burns night, bops and garden parties.

Non-Executive Officers:

Proposers and seconders are not needed for these nominations. If there is only one candidate for any of these positions, an election is not required; the candidate will be elected when nominations close.

Welfare Officer (Katie Stone – ks480)

It is the Welfare Officer’s main task to ensure that graduate students have access to confidential advice on personal and sexual matters, as well as to provide free access to contraception and pregnancy tests. The officer should correspond with the college and university welfare networks to make sure that students are informed of all issues relating to student wellbeing. The officer should also pass on information about university-wide welfare and social events – as well as organizing MCR welfare evenings.

Computing Officer (Gabriel Byng – gb332)

The Computing Officer ensures the website, event and punts booker are up to date and working well. He or she attends the college’s computing committee to represent the interests of graduate students and looks after the computer room next to the MCR, adding new students to the email lists and providing them with log in details.

Accommodation Officer (Chris Thompson-Walsh – cdt25)

Exchange Officer (David Jimenez Torres – daj39)

Organizes formal swaps with other colleges, 2-4 per term, including with our two sister colleges in Oxford.

Fourth Year Officer (Vacant)

GRF Officer (Ruth Martin – rem53)

Organises the bi-termly research forums and chairs the Clare Symposium committee

Mature Students Officer (William Denman – wd239)

Admiral of the Punts (Olivier Grouille – olgg2)

St. Regis Officer (William Denman – wd239)

Green Officer (Madzia Kowalski – mpk33)

The role involves representing the MCR in all ‘green’ issues. This includes being part of Clare’s new Environment Committee, organising events such as (but certainly not limited to): tours of Clare gardens, Green formals, speaker events for national Green Week, film screenings – really it is up to you to decide what you and the Clare community want to do! This role is highly rewarding, since it is so flexible and can involve teaming up with green officers across the university. LGBT Officer (Ray Carlson)

(Again, the MCR Constitution covers all of this is wondrous detail.)

The countdown to freshers’ week has begun! To slowly ease you back into term-level socializing, we have two fantastic events planned for this weekend. First, we’re starting off right with back-to-back movies this Friday. We’ll be screening War Games and Hackers, starting promptly at 8pm. Consumption of popcorn mandatory (we will provide that). Onesies optional (but encouraged).

And speaking of onesies, don’t forget that the pajama (pyjama if you’re British) party is this Saturday, as well. We’ll be sending out another email reminder about that, and will bribe you with milk, cookies, and whisky!

Best,

–
